Good website design revolves around only two aspects: user experience and aesthetics. In practice, however, there are myriads of other variables to consider for examples speed, responsiveness, page’s efficiency in delivering information, and of course, market trend. If there is one thing that all professional designers agree, it is the fact that there is no one-size-fits-all rule; everybody has different interpretation of the perfect combination between form and function. As people try to get creative and continue to come up with new ideas, we can now see the emergence of many different yet equally beautiful web design trends for everyone to enjoy. Website design trends are always evolving, and this year we have some notable mentions.
No More Stock Photos; Own Photography Only
Stock photos had their time on the Internet in many previous years, but now it is the golden age of owning the photography. In 2016 and many years to come, both small and large businesses should no longer use free stock images; own professional photography is the way to go. Stock photos bring the sense of visual content falsehood. Its an important web design trends follow the standards of quality that professional photos envoke.
You can deliver greater value of authenticity and naturalness using own photography instead. Let us not forget that an image can more easily convey the right information and distribute brand awareness on your behalf when you get to choose the object. Instead of spending money to purchase a stock photo, you should hire a photographer (or capture a shot yourself) to get new fresh creative image for your website.
Hover Animation
Using an image as a background of page is nothing new, but hover animation takes this to the next level. As long as you keep the hover effects minimalist, they will not be overly intrusive. Instead, they can create a simple yet exciting browsing experience.
Minimalism and HD Image
Information overload is frustrating. When implemented on a website page, users have difficult times focusing on a single section, finding what they are looking for, and navigating through most parts of it. Minimalism is one of the biggest website design trends in 2016, which introduces an easy way to utilize empty spaces on browser window. Rather than putting a clutter of less-necessary sections into unused spaces of the page, you may want to leave them empty; the easy way to utilize empty space is to not use it at all. When the page already features everything it has to deliver, there is no need to add flashiness. Sometimes you don’t need any obvious sidebars or footers as well.
Regardless of how minimalist you want to go, it is foolish to use blank background. You do not want your website to be like a Google Search homepage with plain white background. Using an HD image on the homepage is an easy way to get user’s attention. When combined with minimalistic design, the image also becomes easier to see and understand. As data compression is becoming more sophisticated and bandwidth friendly, there won’t be slow load times. Page speed is a web design trends that everyone is getting on board with.
Typography
The use of typography for website design has always been popular since the dawn of Internet until today. Now that we have Google Fonts, typography remains a dominating force. For new business, typography actually provides an easy way to create a brand image. There are myriads of types and colors to use, so there is very little chance of coming up with something previously done. A blend of minimalistic theme, HD image and typography crates a striking artistic effect.
Single Page
A lot of website design trends in 2016 are affected by the development and popularity of mobile devices. More websites are now adopting single-page design with which visitors can browse through contents by scrolling. This is a mobile-friendly design; as mobile Internet usage keeps on getting higher, you want to use the design.
Depending on the complexity of the website, single-page is probably not a viable option. If single-page is a necessity, you can use non-scrollable design instead. There is no scrolling, so users must click a simple icon (such as an arrow or dot) on the page to navigate. Either way, users can go back and forth between contents hassle-free. The problem with clicking is that mobile users have difficulties navigating through the websites. You can solve this by using a web app in which the clickable icons are replaced with sliders/scrolling. Rather than having the entire contents on one long page, you can put them on multiple pages accessible by sliding.

Card Layout
Vertical Split
As the name suggest, vertical split basically splits the layout vertically into multiple sections. Website designers use the design to give equal presentations of two or more contents at once. For example, the main product image is on one side, while a simple list of practical benefits on the other.
You can consider this an alternative to either single-page design or card layout. With standard layout, product image will take most of the available space on one page, so relevant information such as features and specifications must be placed on another.
HD Moving Image
It may sound counterproductive to minimalism, but they can actually make a good blend. A moving image is not as bandwidth-demanding as video, yet it can deliver equally stunning visual experience. This is especially useful on a homepage where there is minimum amount of contents to read.
To maintain minimalistic theme, the moving image should be simple enough and must animate in slow smooth progression. A moving crowd of pedestrians will be too much, but an image of a walking person is acceptable and then some. It can live up the page and is inviting enough to make visitors stay, as long as the image is relevant to the overall website.
Material Design
It has been several years since Google started to use material design for its various products. The design revolves around a number of characteristics including minimalism, two-dimensional graphics, clarity, visual hierarchy, and typography. Google’s material is an improvement over flat design.
Google brings depth by utilizing shadows, animations, and grid-based layout. Colors are mainly used for contrasts and highlighting menus. Another important thing is that, once again, the design is mobile-friendly. Many new websites are designed based on those features.
No Hamburger Menu
It does not take too much screen space but the navigation instantly becomes much simpler. Users can still read contents on the browser page and navigate smoothly. Hamburger menu basically buries core features of a website/app, and users must click them over and over again to access the most commonly used functions such as setting, search, home, browse, and more. Hamburger menu is coming to an end.
Just like all many other things, website design is not something you can set and forget. Just because it is popular today, it does not mean people will still like it tomorrow, or next week, or next year. More and better varieties of new designs are always around the corner, so you must be ready to adopt and stay in the competition.
