SSL issues can cause some weird errors on websites. Recently I was working with a social media company called Bizfluence to help them with a particularly strange error that only certain users were experiencing.
When some users logged onto the website, they were getting a 505 error. This error has to do with non-validation of the SSL certificate. The team was quite perplexed and been trying to resolve this issue for over two months.
I did a little investigation and found that they were using the free SSL that comes with Cloudflare. This free SSL is not validated with the company and therefore is causing some users to experience errors.
I explained to them that using a free SSL from Cloudflare or other places is fine for small business websites that are mainly just informational, however the Bizfluence website has thousands of users and lots of data.
Because it is such a large website using so much data, it is important to have a proper handshake between the server and the users in the SSL. This is why I recommended that they get a proper premium EV or wild card SSL.
Luckily the head developer was willing to give this a shot and it actually resolved the issues!
