Coronavirus has had a real impact to businesses all across the country as we are ordered to shelter in place. Many businesses are having a hard time now with their doors shut for a week and a half and no income/revenue stream to be able to support overhead and their employees.
It is a very challenging time for business. The most challenging time I’ve ever seen personally. I was in business during the economic crash of 2008 and that was a very challenging time. During that crash everyone decided to tighten up their budget and not want to spend on marketing, but it didn’t have the same complete cut off of economic life that this situation has with the threat of loss of life.
Coronavirus is a very scary situation economically and most importantly as a threat to our health and loved ones. As America bands together through this there is some changes that are happening on business marketing. Marketing has to shift to reaching the at-home direct consumer.
So businesses who used to sell products at a location are now looking to shift to e-commerce and/or direct-to-consumer delivery options. The best way to service these customers and let them know about the new offering is social media and online on websites.
Web design is become more important right now for certain businesses both putting messages on the website as well as adding e-commerce functionality. It may seem like the time to hold marketing off but that can be very detrimental. One of the most important things to do is to reach out to your customers during this time and connect with them.
It is important to reassure them and let them know that you are available and here to help them through this crisis. For example, we sent out a newsletter to our clients letting them know that are office will be closed due to coronavirus and that we would still be serving them through this time by phone/email.
We offered our clients a complimentary update to their website to let their customers know about their coronavirus (COVID-19) changes. This is how we are helping during these times. It’s important to support each other and be as helpful as possible and offer ways that we can specifically help the situation with our businesses.
Web design is definitely affected in the sense that expansion in certain types of ways is going to be hindered, but other doors are opened and other opportunities for us to help businesses pivot during these difficult times. Businesses will be leaning on web designers more than ever to help them make this pivot successfully and to keep their business flowing.
In a way, web designers are the “economic plumbers” of businesses as we help to reroute the plumbing so that the pipes can keep flowing in a new direction and everyone can continue to keep their jobs.
It is a very critical role that we all have to play through this and we all need to be more considerate, loving and caring through these difficult times, as we are all in this together.
