Map citations are a very interesting feature of Google maps where a user can submit their own map with pointers on it to a business location. Typically when doing this, the user will submit hundreds if not thousands of map pointers going to the business location.
These will be circled all around the location on the map in in a pattern surrounding the business location going out in bands (see the image to the left). The reason why this works is that Google is looking for information from users on how to find local businesses.
When a user submits a map citation over and over and over again this helps the Google search engines to locate the business in the Google maps pack. Google maps pack is the listings that come up first before the organic listings.
It is what shows the map listing and the phone number and name of the business. Typically there are three businesses listed in the map pack and then you can click to see more businesses.
The first three that are listed are going to get the majority of all the phone calls and visits to their websites. If your business is down below the top three and people have to click to find it, it’s very unlikely that you get any business at all from the map listings.
Once you get up into the top three the amount of calls you will get goes way up. The number one listing is especially valuable as it receives a majority, around 80% of all of the phone calls.
So how do we get to the top of the map listings?
One of the best ways to do it is to get reviews. Now reviews take a long time and are a lot of work to get actual customers to review your business. I wrote an article about how to get customers reviews in a easy way, you can read that as well.
Besides reviews, there are some other things that we can do such as update posts regularly on the Google Local page and make sure all the information is up-to-date and is accurate across all platforms.
Finally, this article is all about map citations. Map citations are a way to get help from other users to add your business on a map that they create. This will increase your businesses listing in the local map pack.
The more users that you get to do this map citation for you, the better that your business will rank. Here at SkyPoint Studios we offer this as a service to businesses who want to improve their Google map listings.
