What needs to be done when removing WordPress website from a cPanel hosting environment?
It’s a rather complex process even though it seems like it would be easy, such as just deleting the folder. The first thing that I do when a website needs to be removed from the cPanel server is to download all the site files and database into a zip folder.
This zip folder is stored on my desktop and also in a backed up drive for future use in case I ever need to restore the website. The next thing that needs to do is start to remove the website. This process is a three step process and the very first thing to do is to go into the File Manager and find the website folder.
Inside the website folder is going to be a file called wpconfig. Open up the wpconfig file and scroll down to the database and find out what that name is. Now that we have this name, we’re gonna go back to the main panel homepage area, the login screen and we’re gonna look for MySQL databases.
Open up MySQL databases, and you may need to expand it because it only shows 20 at a time so you might expand if you have more than 20. Scroll down through all databases and find the one with the same name and we’re going to delete this database.
Now that we’ve done that, we’re going to go back to the file manager to the folder and click on the folder and delete the folder. The final step that we need to do is go to the main cPanel homepage area and look for Domains. Inside the Domains area we’re going to look for the domain that goes to the website and we’re going to delete that. Click manage and then click remove domain.
These are all the steps that are required for removing WordPress website from cPanel. Many people will skip the step of removing the MySQL database and they’ll have tons and tons of databases from old websites in there. The problem with this is that all those databases have to load in order for the websites to be served. This slows down your server.
It’s important to monitor resources when you run a cPanel so that it can be as light as possible and you can have the best use of your resources. That’s why I recommend going through this three-step process and making sure that you clean everything out when you’re removing websites.
