Lorem Ipsum is dead now that ChatGPT and AI generated text has come out. There’s no longer a reason to use Lorem Ipsum, which is a filler-text, made-up language that web designers and graphic designers use to mock up designs.
Now, instead of filling up the design with some nonsense, Lorem Ipsum, it is much easier just to go to ChatGPT and put in what you’re looking for.
ChatGPT can fill in all types of content for a website like product descriptions, privacy policies, sales text, calls to action, information & glossaries, blogs, and much much more!
Caution about using AI generated text
Using ChatGPT will not provide SEO value to the website. In fact, it can penalize it quite heavily. The problem which ChatGPT and other AI text generators, is that the content is accumulated from sources on the web where the content is already published & indexed.
When using published/ indexed text instead of creating new text, the issue is that Google doesn’t like this and will penalize for duplicate content. This is a lot like school when a teach would find out an essay was plagiarized and give an F on it.
The last thing we want to do on websites that we’re trying to rank with is get duplicate content strikes. So as a designer, it’s important to let the client know that AI generated text will still needed to be replaced.
Some clients are not going to want do this, they like the AI generated text and want to keep it. This is all fine if they don’t want to create SEO on the website and rank on Google. If they do want to create a SEO, it’s very important to replace all the text with handwritten text from an actual human.
For example, this whole blog post was written by me and not by an AI robot. There’s no way I could create a blog post like this using ChatGPT or any other AI engine. It wouldn’t sound like me and it wouldn’t have the unique perspective I have from doing SEO and web design for over 15 years.
I’ve done extensive testing on AI text generated by ChatGPT and found that Google does penalize websites quite heavily for using it. You can have a massive website with tons of blog posts that are ranked well on Google and pop in just one or two AI generated articles and see search rankings drop considerably.
This is quite dramatic and I’m sure that Google is all over this AI writing as they don’t want their search engines to be replaced with a bunch of garbage. What happens is a feedback loop where the AI is pulling information off the web and writing articles which are just regurgitating info and basically the internet is just talking to itself.
This may be OK in short term, but in the long term the whole Internet gets ruined. So it’s very important for the gatekeepers of the Internet, such as Google and other search engines, to be able to delineate between what is written by a human what has been written by AI.
They are very good at doing this and they already are on the people trying to use AI to rank for SEO. So if you get approached from a company who is selling AI writing services, just know that they are not going to help you with SEO and they will hurt you and you shouldn’t be buying the services as ChatGPT is free.
As a writer/blogger, I am concerned about this technology making writers lazy. As a professional SEO, I am convinced that AI will not help and we need fresh unique content that the web has never seen. THIS IS YOUR WARNING.
Have you used any AI services like ChatGPT, Midjourney, Jasper or another engine? I’d love to hear your stories on how you’re using this new technology! Sound off in the comments down below about how you have gotten rid of Lorem Ipsum and are now using an AI generating tool to create content for your layouts.
