Idea borrowing is what I do when I can’t figure out anything else to add to my website. Basically, it involves cruising the web in large metropolitan cities looking for competitor’s websites.
I might pick Boston, Los Angeles or Atlanta for example. When I find one of these high-ranking competitor websites, I’ll dive into it and look around a bit. Poking around here and there often leads to me discovering some cool feature or page that they have on their website that I could add to my website.
The other day I came across a site while doing some idea borrowing and it had a stand-alone Testimonials page. I have testimonials on my home page, but not a stand-alone page on the main menu. So I borrowed this idea and now I have a separate page specifically for Testimonials.
This is why I try to encourage anyone who’s working on improving website SEO to do some idea borrowing from competitors in other locations.
I recommend using other locations and not your own city because we want to make our website as unique as possible. Not that it’s a bad idea to look at your local competitors websites, we just don’t wanna copy all their features.
WARNING: Do not copy any text or images from theses websites! All the content needs to be original, its just the concept we are borrowing. Stolen content will cause a major negative mark on website SEO, and in some cases can lead to a law suit.
The next time that you’re wondering what else could possibly be great on your website, take my idea borrowing concept for a whirl.
