Fixing WWW on Your Website

There are two ways to access a website, a WWW version and a non-WWW version. The WWW version is the very first way that websites were navigated in the beginning days of the World Wide Web. And by the way, that’s what WWW stands for World Wide Web. In this post I’m going to show the process for fixing WWW.

Because this is a leftover from the original days of the web, websites need to have both a WWW version and a non-WWW version setup. You can decide which one you want to have as your main way of the website coming up. Some websites like to have the non-WWW version which seems more modern and some websites like to use a WWW version.

Some famous websites that use the WWW version are www.facebook.com www.youtube.com www.linkedin.com www.google.com pretty much all the most popular websites all make their site WWW version come up first, but you can also go without the WWW and it will still pull up the website.

How do we go about making sure our website comes up for both versions?

This is a part of the Domain Name Settings or DNS where we need to set a record for the website so that it can come up with a WWW version. First we will navigate to where your domain is registered. This could be registered at GoDaddy or Name Cheap or Host Gator there’s a lot different places where your website domain could be registered.

We need to log into the account and find the domain and go to the part of the domain management area called Domain Name Settings or DNS. Once we arrive in the DNS area you’re gonna see all the current settings for the domain. We need to add a new record and the type of record we’re going to add is a CNAME record.

Once we’ve selected CNAME to add, in the name area we’re gonna put the @ symbol. Then we’re going to put in the value area the domain URL. Finally, just have to hit the save button and we are all good to go!

If you don’t have this done, your website will not show up when people try to put in WWW, it’ll just break and not be there and this can be an issue because it affects your SEO as well as affects your visitors that are coming to your website.
