Growing a YouTube channel is something that you may or may not be interested in as a business owner.
This post is not for people who want to create a YouTube channel to be an influencer or a YouTuber or podcaster or anything like that. There’s plenty of tutorials out there and YouTube channels for that who are way more qualified to speak on it than I am.
This post is specifically for those who are small to medium size business owners who are curious about whether they should have a YouTube channel or not. Perhaps as a small business owner, you started a YouTube channel and it’s quite desolate and there’s no activity or subscribers or views on it.
I know this is how my channel was when I first started out on YouTube. It was quite confusing and a bit frustrating because nobody ever looked at my content and it seemed like there was no possibility of anyone finding it.
I’m writing this now with my channel hitting some pretty major milestones recently, with 10,000 views and over 500 subscribers. Now that may not seem like much for other people, but for me as a small business owner, who focuses on web design, that’s quite impressive. Especially compared to where I started out at.
So how did I get here?
Well for one I did the annual video post challenge in 2022 and did pretty good ended up posting for the majority of the year, every single day. I have hundreds of videos on my YouTube channel now and it’s the consistency of posting that really does make a big difference.
The content that I create is all around web design or how to succeed online/ run a business. This content isn’t going to be for everyone and quite frankly it can be considered quite boring for most people.
I know this and I don’t expect the YouTube algorithm to push me up like a Mr. Beast or something like that. All I want to do is to have content online for my customers to see that I’m an authority and I know what I’m talking about in my space.
I believe I’ve achieved that and I’m looking to continue to expand that goal in 2023 as I do the annual video challenge again.
Are you capable of doing the annual video challenge?
That depends on how much time you can devote to creating videos for YouTube. I recommend doing short one to two minute videos all at once if you can. Create a repository of 5 to 10 videos at a time so that you don’t have to worry about them for a week or two.
This will give you the best chance to post consistently. Every time you solve a problem for a customer, it is an opportunity to create content. That content can be in the form of a video and if that video is helpful to someone, they will find it and they will watch it.
You can also share those videos from YouTube or directly from your phone to LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other social media profiles. I highly encourage doing this and posting the exact same title and description on all those platforms. Why not! This makes your job easier and allows distribution to different audiences across the web.
What’s the secret to growing a YouTube channel?
It’s consistency and hard work! The more often that you post the more often the algorithm has a chance to feed your content to viewers on the platform. I also recommend hitting common titles every once in a while that people may be searching for.
I like to bring in certain brands and compare them. I often compare Wix or Squarespace to WordPress or talk about GoDaddy. These brands have large national advertising campaigns that everybody knows about.
When I do content on one of these large brands, it puts me into the feed of where people are talking about those brands. You can do a similar thing in your business with any large brands that you interact with or have expertise on. Create content on what products work best from these brands.
If you have questions about growing a YouTube channel, definitely hit me up. Like I said, I’m no Mr. Beast and no YouTube expert. I just love what I do and I’ve been able to create a small channel for myself that works well for my small business.
Thank you so much for reading and I will see you on my YouTube channel or back here on my blog!
