Every Website Online

Every website online that has ever existed for the most part can be found on the web’s website archive located at archive.org.

It’s a fantastic tool for finding what websites used to look like and all websites that you may want to pull up for reference. For example, you can see what the original google.com website looked like back in 1999: https://web.archive.org/web/19990117032727/http://www.google.com/

Which is pretty incredible because it still has the beta on the logo and it is definitely a 90s looking website. I use the archive quite regularly to pull up old websites or to see what a website used to look like for a client who has shut down their site.

It’s pretty neat to be able to look back at some of the websites that I worked on in the past. One example is Coded by Jophiel that I used to work on back in 2012 & 2013, you can see what that looks like:

I also worked on a project called Green Directory Montana which ranked sustainable software on a basis of what companies are doing to be green or sustainable. It would rank businesses against each other, with whichever was doing the most sustainable actions ranked the highest in their category and you can see the green badges that they have earned.

Archive.org is a really cool tool that shows how valuable a website is to the web based on how many times it gets archived. The more often a website gets archived, the more valuable it is and the better it’s going to do in search engine optimization.

Not all websites are archived, however, and in this is due to the fact that there is an algorithm inside of archive.org that figures out which websites are valuable based on traffic to the website and how long they’ve been online.

If a website doesn’t get a lot of traffic, then most likely it will not get indexed on archive.org.

What website do you want to look up from the past? Do you want to see what your website is look like 5, 10, 15 or 20 years ago?

Archive.org it is a really fantastic tool which is a free resource for the web. They do run fundraisers from time to time to support their mission and I highly encourage donating to them if you have the means to do so.

I find it one of those quintessential tools for doing web development that all web developers or people who use the web should know about.
