Using spam comments is a strange title isn’t it?
What I’m going to discuss in this article is how to use the spam comments that come in to WordPress for better SEO.
When running a WordPress website, there’s a ton of spam comments that come from time to time. Hopefully you have a plugin like Akismet that blocks the spam, so only a little bit comes through.
Every once in a while they’ll be a spam comment that comes in that’s not too bad, it actually seems like that person read the article and commented something relatively reasonable. The issue with approving these comments is that the person has dropped a link to the website they’re trying to SEO rank for.
That’s why they dropped the comment in the first place. Now normally I would encourage the deletion of these comments, but today I’m going to discuss a strategy that may actually help out the website instead.
The way to use the spam comments is to approve the comment.
Then go in and edit it and in the area where the link is change that to a link on the website.
If the comment is related to a specific service or a product that is on the website, change the link to the landing page where that service or product is at.
So for example, on a landscaping site a spam comment might say “I really like the way that the yard maintenance has been done on this particular house” On the comment there’s a link to some other landscaping company in some other part of the country or World.
Go to the website where yard maintenance is covered as a service on a specific page so that might be website.com/yard-maintenance, for example. Copy this link and replace the link on the spam comment and then publish the comment.
(Example website in the screenshots is landscapingbillingsmt.com)
What this does is allow the person to share their comment but not get the value of the spam link that they’re trying to send to their website, instead it sends the value back to the website where you have more information.
Pretty cool trick huh?
I know it’s pretty radical but that’s the type of content I post on this website. I like to think outside the box and this trick is definitely an example of that.
