Changing WordPress login is a good idea for a couple reasons. All WordPress websites have the same login. It goes the domain name, for example domain.com/wp-admin.
This is just the way that WordPress has worked ever since it started back in 2004. WordPress is the most popular website platform on the planet with around 54% of the market share of all websites. Because of this, WordPress websites are a high target for hackers.
One of the most common ways for hackers to get in is to target the login wp-admin with brute-force attacks. Brute force attacks are a software program that runs a random username and password over and over again until it finds the login to the website.
So by changing the WordPress login, we’re able to prevent hackers from finding out where the login is at and spamming it. There are a couple plugins that work well for changing the WordPress login, one is WPS Hide Login and the other is Easy Hide Login.
I recommend installing WPS Hide Login and going to the settings and changing the URL string from the standard suggested to whatever you want to put in there. This is a chance to do some custom branding as well where you can put your company name here.
Don’t forget to send out the new link to all of the people who use the website as they will now get a 404 error instead of being able to log into the back end of the website when going to /wp-admin.
This is a simple plugin and it works really well. It won’t need many updates or anything like that and it doesn’t do much change to the code. Sometimes it does interact negatively with other plugins or themes right when installing it, so keep an eye on that and make sure you don’t have any bad interactions with it.
That’s it, that’s how you change the login easily for your WordPress site. I recommend doing it for security and for branding purposes. Have a question about how to update your WordPress website?
