GoDaddy domain purchase is a whole process where they try to upsell you left right and down the middle. In this article today, I’m going to show how to navigate a GoDaddy domain purchase and pick the proper products. The majority of the products they try to upsell will not be required typically.
The very first one that they try to hit you with is Domain Privacy for $9.99. Domain Privacy is only necessary for certain types of projects or if you’re very paranoid about your privacy. It’s really not that big of a deal if your business is registered to your domain name, and it may be argued that is actually beneficial.
The next upsell is when they try to throw a free website builder in. This website builder will renew at the regular rate if you don’t cancel it, so it is not really free and it’s a piece of crap that doesn’t work very well. I would highly discourage building any website on this free website builder, unless it’s a hobby website or a club.
These websites have terrible code bases and will never rank well on Google. It’s really important the type of code base that you use for your website design, we recommend either custom HTML or WordPress.
Finally, they have an email service which is optional, but some people sign up for it thinking it’s going to be good but GoDaddy email is one of the worst products they offer. I highly encourage getting a different email account. We offer professional email accounts that are set up through Google that are so much better than the GoDaddy email accounts.
Those are just a few of the things to look out for when purchasing a domain from GoDaddy. Finally they try to get you to register the domain for five years. Typically you don’t need to register a domain this long. I would encourage just doing one year at a time.
The only reason to register for longer than one year, is if you know for sure the business is going to be around and you’re trying to gain extra SEO value. Registering a domain for five years can actually add some small SEO value and is encouraged if you know the business will be around for that long.
For example the website you’re on right now has a domain that has been registered for five years, and that’s because we know we’re going to be around in five years and looking forward to getting that little extra SEO boost.
