Domain Routing Tools

Domain routing tools are required to figure out how to get a domain moved from one place to another on the web. Moving domains and websites is a task web developers do regularly.

In my day-to-day activities, I tend to rely on several websites tools, specifically domain routing tools to get the job done. In this article, I’m going to discuss some of the website tools that I use to figure out domain routing.

The first and most important is called What’sMyDNS.net

This tool allows the look up of current DNS records on any domain. Figuring out what DNS is propagating is a very important task. For example, when you want to move a website from one server to another, the most popular way to do this is by changing the A record. One can also change the NS records, but that comes with other ramifications that may want to be avoided.

I wrote an article about NS verse IP change here. Once the A record has been changed, it is a good idea to use a tool like What’s My DNS to check on the status of the propagation.

Next, I want to cover a tool that helps find the owner of a website and when the domain renews. This tool is called WHOIS records.

I like to use the WHOIS records tool to look up who owns a specific domain. Also, it provides info on when a domain was registered and when it expires. This is very helpful when trying to help a client who does not know anything about who set up a domain for them. With this we can track down the proper account to log into and manage the domain.

The final of my domain routing tools that I like to use is called ShotSherpa.com which allows you to look at websites all around the world and what they look like. It gives you a view panel of eight different websites from around the world for that specific domain.

I use this tool to figure out whether the website has been propagated fully or not yet. Also can check whether site has any issues resolving in certain parts of the World.
