Limit Login Attempts is a plugin that helps to keep hackers out of WordPress websites.

How do hackers try to get into a WordPress website?

Hackers will use Python scripts to continually try to crack the login for the WordPress site. Python is a programming language that a loop can be programmed in to enter in login credentials on websites until the login is cracked.

Once the hackers are inside of the website, what they will do is roll out spam links to a bunch of websites that they run. The whole point of this is to drive revenue to websites that they’re running ads on.

If they can hack 1,000 websites and have them all running links on it, that turns out to be quite lucrative actually. It’s a nightmare for website owners who do get hacked and that’s why I recommend installing the Limit Login Attempts plugin.

What’s cool about Limit Login Attempts, is it will email you whenever a particular person is trying to get into your website. It will give you the IP address of that particular person. You can then go into the settings of the plugin and add that IP address to the blacklist.

The area to add the IP address is under Tools. Now whenever that hacking computer tries to go and attack the login of your website, they won’t be able to and will be immediately blocked.

It’s really important to think about security when you run a WordPress website. You should have the WordFence & Limit Login Attempts plugins as well as a firewall and security on the server. For that I recommend Immunify 360.
