The other day I was asked what’s one thing to do for better SEO? The question came from someone who had an SEO company working on their website and they were seeing some results but we’re wondering what they could do personally to help out.
So with such a question as what’s one thing to do for better SEO, I expressed to them it is simply content. Content is the secret sauce that every business owner can be creating because they know their business better than anybody else.
We all have a hard time taking the time to write and put down our secret techniques or the ways that we do things better than anybody else in our industry, but this is the best way to win online.
One technique that I like to share with people who I encouraged to blog is to use voice-to-text on their phones to email themselves the copy for the blog post. This is a great hack because we all probably don’t really enjoy typing ideas out that much common and this can speed up the process dramatically.
Of course you’ll have to edit whatever comes out of the voice-to-text as it’s not always perfect, but it is so much easier to go this route then actually writing it out by hand.
So why do I say the one thing to do for better SEO is content writing? Because it truly is what Google is looking for. They want to see that you know techniques and ways to do what you do in your business better than anybody else that’s in your field.
They then will grab onto this knowledge and serve it up as search results to people on the web who are searching on Google. This is where the rubber meets the road as it were and you get a return on investment for the time put forward for creating the blog posts.
You see a website is valued not only on how it looks visually and how it operates but also on how many words are present on the website. I took over SEO for a website recently and one of the first things I did was use a tool to count the amount of words on the website.
Turns out they only had 700+ words across the whole website. This is unfortunately way to low to get the attention of Google in a competitive market and they will need to boost those words over 3,000 or so to really see some gains in search.
Of course plumping up the pages with more content is a good way to do this but the very best way to do it is to add blog posts regularly.
Every business should have a blog because every business has something to say. Google wants to share that message with website visitors and they will either send them to the competition or send them to your website depending on how much content you have.
This of course doesn’t mean writing just for writing’s sake, and you should make sure that you’re offering true value to the readers. I try to do that with my blog. I write in a very colloquial manner as if I’m talking to you in person.
It’s probably not the best formal use of writing, but I feel like it’s more practical because the conversational flow of what I’m saying should get the point across and be helpful.
As long as my reader understands what I’m trying to say and actually gets value from what I’m writing, then I feel like the goal has been achieved. So the number one thing I recommend to people when they’re wondering what they can do to get ahead in Google search is to write!
