So the phone rings and I pick it up “Hello, SkyPoint Studios” and it’s one of those annoying auto-responders talking about how our Google local page listing is expired and will soon be removed from Google. The robotic voice rambles on about how important it is to keep this listing and that we need to press 1 to speak to a representative about keeping this listing.
If you own a business I’m sure you have received tons of these types of phone calls. This blog post is all about letting you know that Google won’t call!
There’s no way that Google will call you to tell you about the free service they offer call Google My Business. The only way to speak to Google directly is to have a premium service account with their emails or apps, and even then you have to get a special code for each particular phone call in order to even get through the automated system to speak to someone.
So there’s no way that they would be using telemarketers to call repetitively too businesses all around the country that are using the service for free. These calls are all scammers who are looking to profit off of or just straight-up steal funds for doing these listings that they don’t even have access too (only the owner of the page can manage it through a Gmail account that set it up).
If you really do need to update your Google listings you can do so here at the Google My Business link. When registering a new business they will send you a postcard in the mail with a code on it that needs to be entered into the dashboard online to verify.
This will publish your listing and make you active on the map so that when someone searches for your services or business in your city it will show up in the search results under the map listings. It really is a good idea to have this filled out for your business and of course it is free!
It’s comical to think that these scammers can convince us that our listing is not active or working properly when we have one of the top profiles in our industry with 29 5-star ratings! It’s testiment to the fact that they are not even checking these profiles and just randomly calling all businesses. Regardless, this is one of the most frequent questions I get about online business, so it is good to be able to clear it up.
So no Google won’t call and you don’t have to worry about this being anything you have to pay attention to. It’s a good idea to block these phone numbers so you don’t get bothered again. Unfortunately there’s a new technology that allows robo-dialing from local looking numbers and that makes it very hard to know whether this is a real phone call or a phone call from a scammer coming in.
Don’t worry if you get this caller, just know that Google won’t call and we can all help to stop the scammers by not giving them any attention or any funds.
